Strong wages means pocketbooks are a bit heavier in Saskatchewan.
According to a report from Statistics Canada, the province’s average weekly earnings reached a record high of $918.15 in March 2012.
This 5.9 per cent jump was the highest among all of the provinces and well above the national increase of 2.1 per cent.
Saskatchewan’s wage rate ranked third behind Alberta ($1,056.87) and Newfoundland and Labrador ($923.58). Since August 2011, the province has consistently exceeded the national wage rate.
Saskatchewan’s real wage rate increased 4.1 per cent year-over-year, the highest increase of all provinces and above the national average. The province also recorded an increase of 3.4 per cent in the number of occupied payroll jobs compared to a year ago – the second highest increase in Canada behind only Alberta at 5.2 per cent.
